Pinguicula Gigantea, one of the largest species within the genus Pinguicula, commonly referred to as the Giant Mexican Butterwort, is a remarkable butterwort known for its impressive size and unique characteristics. This species can reach diameters of up to 30 cm (about 12 inches), making it a substantial presence in any carnivorous plant collection. Pinguicula Gigantea is distinctive for producing mucilage on both sides of its leaves, a rare trait among butterworts, which enables it to trap insects more efficiently. Unlike many other butterworts, Pinguicula Gigantea does not produce a winter rosette, maintaining its sticky, carnivorous leaves year-round. This makes it an excellent natural option for controlling pests like fungus gnats and fruit flies throughout the year. Its dormancy is unusual as well; it is not triggered by changes in temperature or light but rather by a lack of moisture.
What to expect
The plant comes with a default nursery pot. The nursery pot is usually 0.5" - 1" smaller than stated to fit into the same size decorative pot. Washable Paper Planter Bags are sold separately.
